In 1968, Army Sgt. Gordon Helsel was bleeding to death in Vietnam when God unmistakably saved his life in a most surprising way.

Now Helsel has written his witness to American history “exactly as it happened.” His book, The Day God Showed Up, is a humble and uplifting tribute to God, Helsel’s fallen and wounded friends, and all Americans who put their lives on the line by serving our country.

The U.S. Army awarded Sgt. Helsel with two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his bravery and wounds sustained. But Gordon Helsel didn’t write this book to boast about medals, he wrote it to keep a promise.

“It’s been 45 years since I left the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam. I know that many of my comrades don’t speak much about their experiences in a combat zone, but I made God a promise many years ago that I would always speak out when given an opportunity. I said I would always tell people about the miracles of February 27, 1968. I guess you could say I struck a deal with God: ‘Get me out of this place, and I will tell my story.’ Well here it is: The Day God Showed Up.

In addition to currently serving as a Virginia delegate, Gordon Helsel is the happy husband of Joy, a father and grandfather. He’s a former business owner whose legacy now thrives under his sons, and he’s former fire chief and former mayor of his hometown, Poquoson.

The Day God Showed Up is American history and Gordon Helsel’s book is the perfect read for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veteran’s Day – or any day. All reviews at Amazon, including those by men who served in Vietnam with Gordon, are the Top Rating of 5 Stars. Published 2013 by WestBow Press, a division of Thomas Nelson.

In April, retiring Delegate John Cox totally and – in some ways – humorously surprised Helsel in the Virginia House of Delegates because Cox himself was totally surprised by his fellow lawmaker. The following video is priceless.
