Andrea Bocelli and Mary J. Blige singing ‘What Child Is This?’

In 1865 William Chatterton Dix wrote the lyrics to “What Child Is This?” while he was recovering from a severe illness and depression because of the illness. He was an insurance company manager. That’s right. He was an insurance agent and he wasn’t defined by his profession. As many people know, Mr. Dix wrote these lyrics to the melody of the English folk song “Greensleeves.” God rest him.

Andrea Bocelli and Mary J. Blige sing it beautifully, but they omit the poignant and necessary words about how we tortured Christ with our sins because He is outside of time. So, let’s please always keep in mind chapter 14 in the Gospel of According to Saint John, where Christ tells us that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments.

What Child Is This?
1. What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

2. Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The Cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

3. So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise a song on high,
The Virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

  1. A new kind of king, humble not intimidating, a new relationship between man and God and a new era in which individual freedom and dignity truly mattered, things that should be a source of pride for Christians and our Judeo-Christian civilization.

  2. Thank you for sharing this, Anita. Just Beautiful! It is nice to Andrea Mary J. passionatly singing about our Lord and The Blessed Mother.
